A new comedic offering from Amy Schumer after the, let's say mixed response, of her Netflix Leather Special; Snatched pairs her with Goldie Hawn as a mother daughter duo that take a vacation to Ecuador only to be kidnapped and held for ransom. As nice as it is to see Goldie Hawn maintain a career this really does feel like Amy Schumer needing a win at first glance. So does Snatched balance the scales a bit or is this another project derailed by Schumer's signature humour going too far?

Well the double entendre of the title was certainly meant to draw in Schumer's regular crowd but the film actually plays it somewhat mild on that side of things. If you were worried this would devolve into the same mentioning of genitals after a punch line that we got with the Leather Special. The beginning half of the film does a good job of subverting many expectations to humorous effect. Easily one of the funniest break up scenes I've seen in a long time start us off as Schumer's character has to replace him for the upcoming vacation she is taking. Her mother has become a bit of a worry wart and shut in, primarily caring for her agoraphobic adult son. Finding an old photo album Schumer manages to pressure her mother into coming with her and off they go.

If this sounds rather tired and trope-y that's because it is. Snatched is a really by the numbers film that does little by way of originality but none the less remains an entertaining 2 hours. Guest roles by Wanda Sykes, Ike Barinholtz, Joan Cusack and Christopher Meloni provide silly character bits for the leads to play off of. Fans of Schumer's brand of humour need not despair, she's in top form for much of the first half of the film. Things really only become more predictable once she has to share more screen time with Hawn.

I'm not saying that the film is bad. There are some genuine laughs to be had. It's just not particularly compelling or original. The sort of funny that you get when a friend sends you a link at work. Enjoyable at the time but otherwise forgettable. It's fun and apart from perhaps 3 scenes generally inoffensive. Basically, if you have a free night and just want a forgettable laugh this is the film for you. There's nothing wrong with vanilla some nights.
