Avengers: Infinity War is a superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Avengers and it is the sequel to 2012's The Avengers and 2015's Avengers: Age of UltronClick here for the review of those films. It is also the nineteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and stars an ensemble cast of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Josh Brolin, Tom Hiddleston, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, and Chris Pratt

The Story/The Direction:

In this film, the audience sees the Avengers (Downey Jr., Evans, Ruffalo, Boseman, Hemsworth, Johansson, Olsen, Bettany, Cheadle, Holland, Stan, Gurira, Hemsworth, and Cumberbatch) team up with Guardians of the Galaxy (Pratt, Saldana, Bautista, Diesel, Cooper, and Klementieff) to attempt to stop Thanos (Brolin) from getting the six all-powerful Infinity Stones. If this happens, he will be able to wipe out half of the population of the universe in order to restore "balance."  To go into any more plot details would spoil the film. The Russo brothers return to direct this film after directing the second and third Captain America films and they continue their success with Marvel films. They are able to create a story that not only has a gripping villain but also fun action sequences while also bringing in seventy characters. The Russo brothers had a tall order to fill and they pulled it off quite well. Being a film that was ten years in the making, they had a lot to work on and they are able to produce a fairly entertaining superhero action film filled with characters.

The Characters:

While the majority of characters do not have as much development as a film should, some characters do progress forward in their overall story significantly. The only really new character that develops over the course of the film is Thanos whose CGI looks great. While he may have been mentioned before in other films, audience members have not seen much of him. Brolin does an amazing job as this character. This character is a villain that has a threatening presence as soon as he steps on screen. Each scene with him builds him and shows how powerful he is.  His character is perhaps the most interesting only followed by Saldana's Gamora, Thano's adopted daughter. The other characters were placed in different places in the universe to find out ways to stop him. Each group works together well and the humor mostly works.

The Flaws:

This film, while enjoyable, is not flawless. From the beginning, the film is uneven and this is mostly due to the mass amount of characters that this film has. The tone tries to be a small embodiment of the previous films which works some of the time but at others, it doesn't. This unevenness can take away from the intensity of the film. Also due to the fact that the Russo brothers are different people from some of the character's prior director's, some character choices seem off from what was established previously. In addition to that, if one has not seen the past films in the franchise, they may not understand who these characters are.  Lastly, while the ending is powerful, the ending of the film does not hit as hard as it should because of the success of other films.

Overall:

As with the prior Avengers films, this movie is a team-up movie at the end of the day. It's not a film that is going to be beyond amazing when it comes to characters. Do the Russo brothers expand on the universe that has been set up for them? Yes, and there is plenty of entertainment to go around. While some people may wish that certain characters were in the film more, that is a personal preference more than a flaw in itself. The majority of the flaws come from the film being a film that is ten years and the Russo brothers having to do so much in a 180-minute runtime. Given everything surrounding this film, however, it is a fairly entertaining movie that does precisely what it intends to.
